Description

Briggs et al developed a prognostic index for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This can help identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Glasgow, University of Kentucky, University of British Columbia, Oxford Outcomes Ltd and Elan Pharma Ltd.

Parameters:

(1) disease severity (as measured by quality of life or symptom severity)

(2) FEV1 as percent of predicted

(3) age

(4) gender

(5) body mass index (BMI)

(6) history of exacerbations or visits to the Emergency Department (ED)

(7) history of cardiovascular disease

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 101

• The higher the score the more severe the COPD.

risk of being hospitalized within 3 years in percent=

= ((0.000589 * ((score)^3)) + (0.0244 * ((score)^2)) - (0.3583 * (score)) + 32.06) / 10

risk of mortality within 3 years in percent=

= ((0.000758 * ((score)^3)) - (0.05271 * ((score)^2)) + (2.111 * (score)) - 6.905) / 10
