Description

Hoffmann et al developed a simple score for identiying a patient with ischemic stroke who is at risk for pneumonia. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from multiple hospitals in Germany participating in the Berlin and Northwest Germany Stroke Registries.

Parameters:

(1) age in years (A)

(2) atrial fibrillation (A)

(3) dysphagia (D)

(4) sex/gender (S)

(5) stroke severity by NIHSS score (S)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 10

• The higher the score the greater the risk of pneumonia.

Performance:

• The area under the ROC curve is 0.84.

• A score >= 5 had a sensitivity of 0.83 and specificity of 0.72 for pneumonia;
