Description

Hijazi et al reported the ABC (age, biomarkers, clinical history) stroke risk score for patients with atrial fibrillation. This can help to identify a pateint who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Uppsala University, Duke University, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Boston University, Auckland City Hospital and University of Auckland.

Patient selection: atrial fibrillation

Outcome: 3-year risk of stroke or systemic embolization

Parameters:

(1) history of stroke or TIA

(2) age in years, from 44 to 90 years

(3) serum troponin I in ng/L (cobas e601, Roche Diagnostics)

(4) blood NT-proBNP (ng/L) (cobas e601, Roche Diagnostics)

points for age in years =

= (0.06856 * (age)) - 3.031

points for serum troponin I =

= (2.5262 * LOG10(troponin)) + 0.01209

points for NT-proBNP =

= (4.207 * LOG10(NT-proBNP)) - 5.859

total score =

= SUM(points for all 4 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 24.3

• The higher the score the greater the risk of stroke or systemic embolization.
