Description

The medically acceptable cold ischemic time is the duration of cold ischemic that is associated with an appropriate and acceptable percentage of acute and long-term graft function and survival based on clinical experience.

Cold ischemic time in hours reflects simple cold storage and use of an appropriate preservative fluid.

Organ

Medically Acceptable Cold Ischemic Time

heart

4 hours

lung

An organ transplanted after a longer than acceptable cold ischemic time may have an acceptable outcome.

Factors impacting the quality of the organ other than cold ischemic time:

(1) age of the donor

(2) quality of the organ

(3) terminal course of the patient

(4) handling of the organ including preservation fluid
