Activities of Daily Living Scale

Purpose: To evaluate a patient's ability to perform activities of daily living using the scale of Presant et al.

Description

Presant et al developed an instrumental activities of daily living (ADL) scale to evaluate functional capacity of elderly patients receiving chemotherapy. The authors are from the California Cancer Medical Center and University of Southern California in Lost Angeles.


Parameters:

(1) using the telephone

(2) getting to places out of walking distance (some form of transportation required)

(3) shopping for groceries or food

(4) preparing own meals or using a microwave

(5) doing household chores (vacuum, dust, dishes, handyman)

(6) doing own laundry or taking clothes to the cleaner

(7) taking own medicine (right timing, right dose)

(8) managing own mail and money

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 8
