A person who inhales trimethyltin may develop an acute limbic-cerebellar syndrome.
Neurologic findings:
(1) hearing loss
(2) ataxia
(3) nystagmus
(4) sensory neuropathy
(5) seizures
Neurobehavioral findings:
(1) disorientation
(2) confabulation
(3) amnesia
(4) impulse control disorder (aggressive behavior, hyperphagia, disturbed sexual behavior, etc)
Laboratory findings:
(1) elevated organotin levels in the urine
The severity of the syndrome was proportional to the peak level of organotin excreted in the urine. The peak in excretion may occur from 1 to 10 days after the exposure.
Outcomes:
(1) death
(2) severe disability due to neurologic complications
