A microscopic count in a histologic section needs to be adjusted for the thickness of the section. If a threshold is given for a section of a specific thickness then that threshold will change for a section of a different thickness.
Parameters:
(1) count for items per square mm in a section of thickness X microns
(2) thickness of the reference method in Y microns
count by the reference method per square mm =
= (count per square mm) * Y / X
NOTE: This is a simple calculation that makes a number of assumptions. A cell has a thickness of several microns so may appear in multiple serial sections.
