Ingestion of acetic acid is uncommon and associated with adverse effects.
The exposure may be:
(1) occupational
(2) accidental
(3) intentional with suicidal intent
Important variables:
(1) volume of the acetic acid
(2) concentration of the acetic acid
The most common reported adverse effects:
(1) multiorgan failure
(2) disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)
(3) necrosis of exposed mucosal surfaces
Rarely the exposure may be per rectum, which can result in necrosis of the colonic mucosa.
