Santonin was an antihelminthic drug that was discontinued because of its relative toxicity compared to newer drugs. It was used to expel adult roundworms from the gastrointestinal tract.

Santonica refer to the unexpanded flower heads from which santonin is extracted.
Chemistry: sesquiterpenoid
Adverse effects include:
(1) xanthopsia (yellow vision)
(2) fixed drug eruption
(3) toxic amblyopia
(4) mydriasis
(5) pallor
(6) profuse sweating
(7) headache
(8) confusion, restlessness or apathy
(9) nausea and vomiting
(10) disturbed hearing
(11) trembling
(12) hemolytic anemia
(13) allergic reactions
(14) seizures
(15) opisthotonus
(16) painful urination and/or hematuria
(17) disturbances of taste and/or smell
(18) brownish color to fingernails
(19) respiratory failure
