Telbivudine is an L-nucleoside analog used to treat viral hepatitis B. A number of serious adverse side effects may occur during its use.
Possible mechanism: mitochrondrial toxicity
Adverse drug effects associated with telbivudine:
(1) myositis with rhabdomyolysis
(2) neuritis
(3) lactic acidosis (hyperlactatemia)
(4) multi-organ failure (MOF)
A flare of viral hepatitis has been reported if the drug is stopped.
Differential diagnosis:
(1) fulminant hepatic failure
(2) adverse drug reactions to other drugs
