Xylazine is a veterinary sedative and general anesthetic. It can be used as a drug of abuse. An overdose can result in death.
Mechanism of action: alpha-2 adrenergic agonist.
Misuses:
(1) primary abuse
(2) adulteration of or mixed with other drugs of abuse
(3) drug-facilitated assault
Routes of use:
(1) injection
(2) inhalation
(3) ingestion
Adverse effects:
(1) CNS depression
(2) bradycardia
(3) marked hypotension
(4) respiratory arrest
