Description

Eyer et al developed nomograms for predicting problems during alcohol withdrawal. One nomogram predicted the chances of delirium tremens. The authors are from Medizinische Klinik of Technische Universitat Munchen.

Patient selection: alcohol withdrawal

Outcome: delirium tremens

Parameters:

(1) serum potassium concentration in mmol/L from 2 to 6 mmol/L

(2) platelet count from 0 to 600*10^9/L

(3) structural brain lesion

points for potassium =

= (-19.6165 * (potassium)) + 117.699

points for platelet count =

= (-0.153846 * (platelet count)) + 100

Structural Brain Lesion(s)

Points

absent

0

present

31.5

total score =

= SUM(points for all 3 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 210

• The higher the score the greater the risk of delirium tremens.
