An alcoholic may be more likely to commit suicide if certain risk factors are present.
Risk factors for suicide by an alcoholic:
(1) male gender
(2) age > 50 years
(3) living alone
(4) unemployment
(5) poor social support
(6) recent interpersonal loss
(7) continued drinking
(8) excessive drinking (binge drinking, drinking large amounts)
(9) comorbid substance abuse
(10) major depressive episode
(11) serious medical and/or mental condition
(12) suicidal ideation or communication
(13) history of suicide attempt
(14) family history of alcholism
(15) easy access to highly lethal means of suicide
