Patient selection: pregnant woman

Time frame: past 24 hours
Parameters:
(1) sense of well-being (from excellent to very poor)
(2) nausea (from none to extreme)
(3) vomiting and/or retching (from none to extreme)
(4) hypersalivation (from none to extreme)
(5) food and drink intake (from normal to none)
Each parameter is scored on a visual analogue scale (VAS) from 0 (best) to 10 (worst imaginable).
total score =
= SUM(points for all of the parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0 (excellent)
• maximum score: 50 (extremely poor)
• Hyperemesis gravidarum is associated with higher scores.
• The score can be monitored over time to evaluate the course and the response to any intervention.
The index may be accompanied by a row of circular faces ranging from smiling to misery.
