Chemical class: formamidine
Uses: acaride, ticks, mites, Demodex
Most exposures are accidental, but suicidal and homicidal exposures occur.
Clinical and laboratory findings may include:
(1) altered mental status (drowsy, unconscious)
(2) miosis or mydriasis
(3) bradycardia
(4) respiratory insufficiency
(5) hypotension
(6) vomiting
(7) hypothermia
(8) hyperglycemia
A mothball-like odor may be noticed.
The clinical appearance can be confused with organophosphate poisoning. But the patient does not show fasciculations, salivation, lacrimation or diarrhea.
Mortality is low if appropriate supportive therapy is given. Atropine may be useful in severe bradycardia.
