Rarely a patient with hairy cell leukemia (HCL) may present with aplastic anemia.
Findings:
(1) pancytopenia
(2) marrow hypoplasia or aplasia
(3) inconspicuous hairy cells with or without fibrosis
Hairy cells may be detected in the marrow by staining with HCL markers (CD11c, CD20, CD25, CD103).
Differential diagnosis:
(1) hairy cell leukemia with pancytopenia but large number of hairy cells in the marrow
(2) aplastic anaemia from other causes
