Hypoplastic myelodysplasia may mimic aplastic anemia. A number of findings can help in distinguishing the two conditions.
Findings that are unreliable for distinguishing the two conditions:
(1) dyserythropoiesis
(2) collections of immature granulocyte cells (may be seen in aplastic anemia during marrow recovery)
Findings that are associated with hypoplastic myelodysplasia may include:
(1) circulating blasts
(2) dysplasia of myeloid series
(3) dysplasia of the megakaryocytes
(4) increased reticulin
(5) MDS-associated cytogenetic abnormalities
