Parameters:
(1) number of short duration episodes with symptoms and functional restriction, separated from each other by long symptom-free intervals of apparently normal lung function
(2) presence of prolonged symptomatic periods with obstruction and restricted function
(3) total duration of prolonged symptomatic periods
(4) need for continuous use of asthma medications and/or hospital care
