A physically active person or athlete with hypertension can exercise or compete provided that he or she manages the disease appropriately.
Discontinue:
(1) alcohol, drug or stimulant abuse
(2) medications contributing to an elevation in blood pressure
Activities to avoid (due to the risk for a sudden rise in blood pressure):
(1) weight lifting and body building
(2) isometric or intense resistive exercise
