Description

A woman with an ovarian tumor may develop an autoimmune hemolytic anemia.

Clinical features:

(1) onset of a hemolytic anemia with a positive direct antiglobulin test

(2) presence of an ovarian tumor

(3) poor response to corticosteroid therapy and/or splenectomy

(4) disappearance of the hemolytic anemia following resection of the ovarian tumor

The ovarian tumor is classically a mature teratoma (dermoid cyst) but the syndrome may occur with other types of ovarian tumors.
