Benign Ethnic Neutropenia (BEN) is condition seen in certain ethnic groups that has little clinical impact on the patient. The patient may undergo a complete medical work-up if the ordering physician does not recognize the condition.

Features of benign ethnic neutropenia (BEN):

(1) African, Caribbean, or Middle Eastern descent

(2) normal clinical course without increased risk of infection

(3) low absolute neutrophil count (< 1,500 per µL; typically 1,000 to 1,500)

(4) variable mild anemia

(5) no other explanation for the neutropenia

Other family members can show the neutropenia.
