Keteyian et al reported an equation for predicting the maximal heart rate during exercise for a patient with heart failure who is receiving beta-blockade therapy. The authors are from multiple universities in the United States and Canada.
Patient selection: heart failure on beta-blocker therapy
Parameters:
(1) age in years
(2) resting heart rate in beats per minute
(3) method of exercise
Method of Exercise
Points
treadmill
0
stationary bicycle
5
predicted maximal heart rate =
= 119 + (0.5 * (resting heart rate)) – (0.5 * (age)) – (points for method of exercise)
Performance:
• The equation had an R^2 of 0.28 and SEE of 18 beats per minute.
• The equation (220 – (age)) had an R^2 of –2.93 and SEE of 43 beats per minute.
