Description

Streptococcus pneumoniae undergoes autolysis in the presence of bile salts.

Bile salts: sodium deoxycholate, sodium taurocholate

Mechanism: activation of autolysins (autolytic enzymes)

Use: To distinguish Streptococcus pneumoniae from other streptococci
