The serum total bilirubin-to-albumin ratio can be used to determine the risk that a neonate with jaundice will develop bilirubin-induced neurologic dysfunction (BIND).
total bilirubin to albumin ratio =
= (serum total bilirubin in mg/dL) / (serum albumin in g/dL)
Interpretation:
• minimum ratio: < 0.5
• maximum ratio: > 13
• The higher the ratio, the higher the risk of bilirubin-induced neurologic dysfunction.
