Description

Dressler and Benecke identified a number of conditions that may be associated with an increased risk for adverse effects following injections of botulinum toxin. In general botulinum toxin is associated with few serious adverse effects when used properly. The authors are from Rostock University in Germany.

myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome (impaired neuromuscular transmission)

some toxin preparations (BT-B) are associated with autonomic adverse effects

anticholinergic drug therapy

some toxin preparations (BT-B) are associated with autonomic adverse effects

allergy to botulinum toxin or additives comprising the toxin preparation

serious allergic reaction such as anaphylaxis may occur
