Description

Abdul et al evaluated women with ovarian cancer who underwent bowel resection. Women who require bowel resection have a worse prognosis but it can be helpful when there are clear indications. The authors are from Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, England.

Valid indications for bowel resection:

(1) optimum debulking of the ovarian tumor

(2) bowel obstruction

Risk factors for bowel resection:

(1) reoperation for ovarian cancer

(2) signs and symptoms of bowel obstruction

(3) FIGO Stage III or IV disease

(4) CA125 concentration >= 2,500 U/mL

A woman who may be at risk for bowel resection should be counseled prior to surgery about the possibility of this operation being performed.
