A neonate may show significant breast enlargement (neonatal mastauxe). While many neonates may show mild enlargement, a few have much larger breasts. This may be present at birth or evolve over several days.
Pathogenesis: effect of maternal estrogen and prolactin from the neonate and/or mother
Clinical features:
(1) breast enlargement, typically bilateral
(2) tender to palpation
(3) induration
It may affect both male and female neonates.
Occasionally milk may be secreted (neonatal lactation if scant; neonatal galactorrhea if significant). This may be referred to as witch's milk in folklore.
Sometimes a bacterial infection may occur (neonatal mastitis).
