Description

The Bronchiectasis Aetiology Comorbidity Index (BACI) can be used to evaluate comorbidities in a patient with bronchiectasis.

Parameters:

(1) metastatic malignancy

(2) hematologic malignancy (when not considered the underlying cause for the bronchiectasis)

(3) COPD

(4) cognitive impairment

(5) inflammatory bowel disease

(6) liver disease

(7) connective tissue disease

(8) iron deficiency anemia

(9) diabetes mellitus

(10) asthma

(11) pulmonary hypertension

(12) peripheral vascular disease

(13) ischemic heart disease (IHD)

= SUM(points for all 13 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 55

• The higher the score the greater the comorbidity.

• A high BACI is associated with increased morbidity in patients with bronchiectasis.

• The hazard ratio for death was 1.18 per 1 point increase.

Performance:

• The area under the ROC curve was 0.75 for 2 year mortality, 0.76 for 3 year mortality, 0.79 for 5 year mortality.
