Description

Bupropion (Brand name Zyban) is an antidepressant that can be used for smoking cessation. Abuse potential has only been recognized recently.


 

Mechanism of action: blocks neuronal reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine. It also antagonizes acetylcholine at neuronal nicotinic receptors. It is structurally related to amphetamine.

 

Abuse can occur through high oral dose, intravenous injection or nasal insufflation of crushed tablets.

 

Risk factors:

(1) polysubstance abuse, especially stimulants

(2) inmate of a correctional facility

 

Signs of overdose:

(1) seizures

(2) lethargy or hypomania

(3) tremor

(4) vomiting

(5) agitation

(6) sinus tachycardia

(7) widening of the QRS complex progressing to ventricular dysrhythmia
