Byssinosis refers to chronic occupational bronchitis in cotton and textile workers. Schilling separated patients into clinical grades that correlate with severity of disease.
Parameters:
(1) symptoms on first day of the work week ("Monday morning fever")
(2) symptoms on other days of the work week
(3) permanent respiratory disability
Symptoms:
(1) chest tightness
(2) irritation of the respiratory tract and/or bronchitis
(3) fever
(4) shortness of breath
