Description

A person who lives in an area where cannabis (marijuana) is illegal may travel to a region where it is legal.

Risk factors for an adverse outcome of cannabis tourism:

(1) exposure to a potent form of cannabis

(2) pre-existing mental disorder

(3) co-ingestion with a drug of abuse illegal in the host country

(4) placing unused cannabis in luggage for the return trip

(5) attempting to drive while intoxicated

(6) co-intoxication with alcohol

(7) inadequate health insurance coverage at the destination

A person with a pre-existing mental disorder may have severe psychiatric symptoms if exposed to a potent cannabis product. Getting appropriate mental health care may be difficult in some locations. In addition, the person may not have suitable health insurance.

Immigration authorities of the home country may conduct drug testing of a person returning from a foreign country where drug use is legal. A positive test for marijuana can get the person into legal trouble even if no cannabis is found.
