Sun et al reported the Canton score for evaluating a patient with gastric cancer. The authors are from the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China.
Patient selection: gastric cancer
Parameters:
(1) prognostic nutritional index (PNI) of Onodera et al
(2) neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR)
(3) platelet count in 10^9/L
Risk factors:
(1) PNI < 48.2
(2) NLR > 1.83
(3) platelet count > 300 * 10^9/L

where:
• The score is the number of risk factors present.
Interpretation:
• A Canton score of 2 or 3 had a worse overall survival (Hazard Ratio 1.6).
Performance:
• The sensitivity is 85% and specificity 35%.
• The area under the ROC curve for overall survival is 0.68. The area is 0.65 for 5-year survival.
