Hashimoto et al developed a simple score for evaluating patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. This is based on preoperative measurement of C-reactive protein, serum albumin and the platelet count. The authors are from Fukuoka City Hospital and Nigata University Medical Hospital in Japan.
Parameters - preoperative measurements of:
(1) C-reactive protein (CRP)
(2) serum albumin level in g/dL
(3) platelet count per µL
Parameter |
Finding |
Points |
C-reactive protein (CRP) |
< 1.0 mg/dL (normal) |
0 |

>= 1.0 mg/dL (increased) |

serum albumin |
>= 4.0 g/dL (normal or increased) |
0 |
|
< 4.0 g/dL (decreased) |
1 |
platelet count |
>= 120,000 per µL (normal or increased) |
0 |
|
< 120,000 per µL (decreased) |

where:
• The reference range for serum albumin of 4.0 to 5.0 g/dL may differ from levels in the US (lower limit around 3.2 to 3.4 g/dL depending on age).
• The reference range for platelet count of 120,000 to 380,000 per µL may differ from levels in the US (150,000 to 400,000 per µL seems a common range).
total CAP score =
= SUM(points for all 3 parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 3
• The higher the score the worse the prognosis.
