Some people in Caribbean islands develop an illness with erythema migrans that is distinct from Lyme disease.
Clinical features:
(1) erythema migrans type rash that lasts for weeks
(2) variable joint and body pain
(3) variable headaches
(4) exclusion of Lyme disease and STARI
(5) variable tick exposure
The tick vectors for Lyme disease and STARI are not found in the Caribbean, but other ticks are present.
Possible causes:
(1) another species of Borrelia
(2) Rickettsia
(3) other tick-borne pathogen
