Liu et al used a classification and regression tree (CART) analysis to evaluate older adults who have been receiving mechanical ventilation. They wanted to identify patients who were successfully extubated following a successful spontaneous breathing test. The authors are from the Medical College of the Chinese People's Armed Police Forces in China.
Patient selection: adult >= 65 years after a successful spontaneous breathing test
Parameters:
(1) P0.1 (occlusion pressure at 0.1 seconds) in cm H2O
(2) rapid shallow breathing index (RSBI) at 1 minute
(3) rapid shallow breathing index (RSBI) at 30 minutes
RSBI =
= (respiratory rate) / (tidal volume)
delta RSBI-30 in percent =
= (RSBI-30)/RSBI-1 * 100
product of P0.1 and RSBI-30 in cm H2O*breaths per min per L =
= (P.01) * (RSBI30)
P0.1 * RSBI-30
RSBI-1
