Shindo et al listed the various categories of pneumonia. The authors are from multiple hospitals in Japan participating in the Central Japan Lung Study Group.

hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP)
onset >= 48 hours after hospital admission
healthcare-associated pneumonia (HCAP)
(not HAP) AND (1 or more qualifying conditions)
community-acquired pneumonia
not HAP or HCAP
Qualifying conditions for HCAP:
(1) hospitalized >= 2 days in the preceding 90 days (3 months)
(2) resident of an extended care facility or nursing home
(3) receiving home intravenous therapy
(4) received home wound care in the preceding 30 days (1 month)
(5) chronic dialysis during the preceding 30 days (1 month)
HAP includes ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP).
