A number of conditions can cause a stricture in the anterior urethra of a male.
The anterior urethra was divided into 3 anatomic regions:
(1) fossa navicularis
(2) pendulous urethra (associated with longer strictures)
(3) bulbar urethra (associated with iatrogenic strictures)
Sexually-transmitted disease:
(1) gonorrhoeae
(2) Chlamydia urethritis
Iatrogenic:
(1) traumatic catheterization
(2) prolonged catheterization
(3) repeated urethral instrumentation
(4) transurethral surgery
Other identifiable cause:
(1) trauma
(2) lichen sclerosis
A significant percentage of cases of anterior urethral strictures may be idiopathic.
