A number of conditions can cause an accumulation of iron-containing pigment within the liver.
Causes of iron accumulation within the liver:
(1) alcoholic liver disease
(2) hemochromatosis
(3) blood transfusion
(4) hemolytic anemia
(5) sideroblastic anemia
(6) viral hepatitis
(7) iron intake (dietary or medicinal iron ingestion; parenteral administration)
(8) porphyria cutanea tarda
(9) congestion
(10) cirrhosis, especially after portocaval shunting
(11) congenital atransferrinemia
