Stomatocytosis refers to a change in the appearance of a red cell's central pallor that resembles a mouth or slit ("stoma").
Hereditary:
(1) dehydrated hereditary stomatocytosis (xerocytosis)
(2) overhydrated hereditary stomatocytosis
(3) other variants of hereditary stomatocytosis
(4) sitosterolemia
(5) Rh(null)
(6) Tangier's disease (analphalipoproteinemia)
(7) LCAT deficiency (lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase)
Acquired:
(1) hemolytic anemia
(2) acute alcohol abuse
(3) cocaine abuse
(4) medications (phenothiazine, taxanes, ifosfamide, other)
(5) myelodysplasia
