A neonate may develop thromboembolism for one or more reasons.
Neonatal disorders:
(1) birth asphyxia
(2) respiratory distress syndrome
(3) neonatal infection or sepsis
(4) necrotizing enterocolitis
(5) severe dehydration
(6) congenital nephrotic syndrome
(7) polycythemia
(8) congenital heart disease
Intervention-related:
(1) central line
(2) surgery
(3) immobilization
Maternal disorders:
(1) maternal diabetes
(2) maternal antiphospholipid antibodies (lupus anticoagulant)
(3) inherited thrombophilia (protein S, protein C, Factor V Leiden, prothrombin G20110A)
