Mastoiditis indicates infection in mastoid process, with involvement of the mastoid air cells. Diagnosis can be made by meeting one of the following two criteria.
Criteria 1: pathogen isolated from culture of purulent drainage from mastoid
Criteria 2 - both of the following:
(1) at least 2 of the following:
(1a) fever (> 38° C)
(1b) pain
(1c) tenderness
(1d) erythema
(1e) headache
(1f) facial paralysis
(2) at least one of the following:
(2a) organisms seen on Gram stain of purulent material from mastoid
(2b) positive antigen test on blood
