A patient with a cochlear implant is at increased risk for pneumococcal meningitis. The CDC has recommended that a patient with a cochlear implant receive adequate pneumococcal vaccination before and after the procedure.
Types of vaccines available:
(1) pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, 7 valent (PCV7)
(2) pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine, 23 valent (PPV23)
The conjugate vaccine is generally not recommended for anyone >= 60 months (5 years) of age.
Parameters:
(1) age in months
(2) number of doses of PCV7 received in primary series
(3) vaccination with additional dose PCV7
(4) vaccination with PPV23

An additional dose of PCV7 is given at 12-15 months of age if primary series started at < 12 months.
