Chemical fumigants can be helpful in controlling pests. A number of precautions need to be taken to protect workers who may be exposed.
General recommendations:
(1) The agents used as a fumigant should be known and the data sheets available.
(2) Fumigant levels in the air should be monitored.
A worker should only enter the area if either:
(1) he or she is wearing appropriate personal protective equipment
(2) the area has been adequately aerated to safe levels
Aeration requires:
(1) adequate time
(2) proper stacking for good airflow
(3) packaging that does not absorb a fumigant or retain it
