The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) have developed surveillance definitions for health care-associated infection (HCAI) and specific types of infections in health care settings. The diagnosis of disseminated infection (DI) can be made if certain features are present.
Clinical features:
(1) involvement of multiple organs and/or systems
(2) no apparent single site of infection
(3) often due to a virus
Exclusions:
(1) primary infection with metastatic sites (bacterial endocarditis, etc)
(2) fever of unknown origin (FUO)
(3) any condition with a separate designation such as neonatal sepsis (CSEP)
