A patient receiving chemotherapy may develop osteonecrosis.
Mechanism: avascular necrosis
Risk factors:
(1) diabetes
(2) intensive chemotherapy
Clinical features:
(1) no evidence of osteonecrosis prior to chemotherapy
(2) development of osteonecrosis after starting chemotherapy
(3) exclusion of other causes of osteonecrosis
Differential diagnosis:
(1) radiation therapy associated osteonecrosis
(2) corticosteroid therapy associated osteonecrosis
(3) other causes of osteonecrosis
(4) chemotherapy-associated growth arrest
(5) necrosis in a bone metastasis
(6) trauma or surgery
