Jepsen et al developed a comorbidity score for patients with cirrhosis called the CirCom score. This can be used to describe the comorbidity burden for the patient. The authors are Aarhus University in Denmark.
Patient selection: cirrhosis
Comorbid conditions:
(1) cancer
(2) chronic kidney disease
(3) chronic obstructive lung disease (COLD)
(4) epilepsy
(5) peripheral vascular disease
(6) congestive heart disease
(7) acute myocardial infarction
(8) substance abuse other than alcohol

number of comorbid conditions =
= SUM(points for Point 1)
CirCom score =
= MAX(Point 2 for all comorbid conditions present) + (1 point if 2 or more comorbid conditions present)
Interpretation:
• minimum CirCom score: 0
• maximum CirCom score: 6
• The higher the CirCom score the worse the comorbidity burden and the worse the prognosis for the patient.
