Description

Goldbert et al reported a classification for evaluating a neonate for late-onset sepsis. The authors are from Schneider Children's Medical Center (Israel), Tel Aviv University, Hospital for Sick Children (Toronto), Maccabi Health Care Services (Israel), and Rabin Medical Center (Israel).


Patient selection: neonate being evaluated for late-onset sepsis

 

Abnormalities to document:

(1) tachypnea

(2) dyspnea

(3) pallor

(4) skin mottling

(5) tachycardia

(6) abnormal temperature

(7) abdominal distention

(8) irritability

(9) hypotension

 

Significant findings:

(10) sick appearing (based on impression of examining physician)

(11) hemodynamic instability (hypotension requiring treatment (fluid, drugs)

(12) respiratory instability (multiple apneic episodes, multiple desaturation episodes, initiation of respiratory support, escalation from noninvasive to invasive ventilation)
