Parameters seen on the renal imaging studies:
(1) renal parenchymal necrosis
(2) fluid content (renal and/or perirenal)
(3) gas pattern (result of gas-producing bacteria)
Criteria for Type I - both of the following:
(1) renal parenchymal necrosis/destruction
(2) one or both of the following:
(2a) absence of fluid collections
(2b) streaky or mottled gas pattern
Criteria for Type II - both of the following:
(1) renal and/or perirenal fluid collection
(2) one or both of the following:
(2a) bubbly pattern
(2b) gas in the collecting system
The mortality rate with Type I is considerably higher than for Type II (69% vs 18%).
