Description

Fitz-Hugh-Curtis Syndrome (FHCS) refers to the presence of perihepatitis in a patient with a genital infection.


 

The syndrome is more common in sexually-active adolescents and young adults, primarily women..

 

Clinical features:

(1) genital infection, which may involve pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in females

(2) perihepatitis with right upper quadrant pain and a friction rub at the right anterior costal margin

(3) fever

(4) exclusion of other explanations (cholecystitis, pyelonephritis, etc)

 

Imaging findings:

(1) abdominal CT shows subcapsular enhancement about the liver

 

Laboratory findings:

(1) evidence of genital Chlamydia and/or Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection

 

Complications:

(1) adhesions about the hepatic capsule

(2) small bowel obstruction secondary to adhesions

(3) infertility (associated with the PID)
