Human lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) is an arenavirus that humans can acquire from rodents.
Most human infections are either:
(1) subclinical
(2) a mild flu-like illness with one or more of the following:
(2a) fever
(2b) malaise
(2c) anorexia
(2d) myalgias
(2e) muscle aches
(2f) headache
(2g) nausea and vomiting
More serious disease include:
(1) aseptic meningitis
(2) progressive systemic disease with death
Fetal infection during the first or second trimester can result in:
(1) hydrocephalus
(2) psychomotor retardation
(3) blindness
